Dr.Boulton, Dr.Lyon and Dr.Engelmann on disengaged kids (Part 2)

I have copied the comments of Dr. Boulton and my responses in the Linkedin website for your convenience.

My comment in Linkedin about 1 year ago:

"One should stop categorising all students who find it difficult to read as dyslexics and shove them aside. A majority of these kids are kids who learn differently from the roughly 80% of kids who learn regardless of the way they are taught. Researchers in Children of the Code already are aware of how to teach these kids.

There are many teachers around the world who have taught disengaged kids successfully. Why not spend the required money to teach these kids instead of wasting it on building prisons and teaching kids in prison. Find the cause and eradicate it rather than trying to find a cure for the symptoms."

My comment on the above post (see part 1) about a week ago:

"..... how to resolve the ambiguity they experience"(Dr. David Boulton)

I had written to Dr.David, Dr.Reid Lyon and Dr.Siegfried Engelmann a few years ago and after the first few email exchanges there was no further response. I have now clearly identified how to determine a shut-down student and have written about what it takes to get them to read. I do hope that Dr.David Boulton will seriously look into how to help these kids. We can reduce the illiteracy rate if we start teaching the proper way.

Dr. David Boulton’s response:

Learning-Activist, Non-Profit Executive Director, Theorist, Technologist, Author, Consultant, PD…

I concern myself with all children (2/3 of U.S. kids) who do not reach grade level proficiency (reading transparent to learning at their grade level).

At the core are three issues (which are described in detail on the COTC site): 1) insufficient readiness for the challenge of learning (auditory/linguistic/cognitive/speed) 2) unnatural confusion 3) self-blame>shame (distraction/avoidance)

Children of the Code avoided advocating solutions so as not to be dismissed as having an agenda other than learning deeper into the challenge. 3 decades of work have culminated in a solution, an entirely different approach to supporting learning to read:

Good luck all

Luqman Michel:
Dr. David Boulton, I have read 'The Children of the Code' a few times. I have been teaching kids who have shut-down for more than 10 years now. I have written as to why these shut down kids shut down when it comes to the English language but not when they read in Malay and Romanised Mandarin which use the same 26 alphabets. A little thought as to why this is the case should give you the answer. I know the answer and have written to you and I did not get a response. Dr. David Boulton, what is written in the Children of the Code is what most people already know - about 10 to 20 % of kids all over the world cannot read in the English language. I know why but do you have a ear to listen?

Luqman Michel:
Dr. David Boulton, one of the causes of kids shutting down is one of the videos in your "Children of the Code" Site. I shall write about it in Linkedin soon and would appreciate your comment. Wish you well, Dr.

Dr. David Boulton:

I have been bombarded over the years with people 'certain' that if only there way was adopted (spelling reform to instructional method) everyone would be great readers. I don't have the time or interest in being the object such people want to stroke themselves with. I am clear and on the record for decades re what is the reason children struggle to read English. If as you say you have been through my work you'd know that. I appreciate that you help people. I don't want engage further with you. I am not interested in being a platform for self aggrandizing. I wish you all the best.

Luqman Michel

Thank you very much for your response and I understand that you do not want to further engage with this discussion with me but please allow me to publish here in Linkedin what I have learned over the years from having taught shut-down kids. Dr. Boulton it is nothing to do with my way or your way. Just do not propagate teaching methods that are clearly wrong. Yes sir, I have been through your work and I know why a great majority of the kids classified as dyslexics struggle to read. You are welcome to give your comments on my post today and on future posts. Wish you well.

"Ninety-five percent of those kids are instructional casualties." I wrote to some of the experts who created COTC in 2015. They did not reply. Now, when I ask similar questions I am removed as a connection.

Now, how do we change the status quo if "human beings are latching onto their beliefs, their assumptions, their egos, their careers rather than looking very clearly at what works and what doesn’t …………” I have studied kids who had shut down since 2004 and have come up with why they disengage from learning. I am prepared for any questions grilling me on what I have written. Instead of grilling me, if 'pillars of education' just shut me off, how will we ever learn? Why doesn't this team study what has been independently researched by someone who wants to help kids in the future and change their course of life?

I am intrigued as to how or why two of the three links given above by Dr. David Boulton disappeared within a few days of me response to his comment. I tried clicking on the following links given by Dr. Boulton:

And the following is what I get:

The video immediately following the 3rd link provided above
is the following.

This is exactly what I mean by teaching kids sounds of alphabets that make them confused and thereby shut-down.

With the millions of dollars received by COTC why can't they have videos produced by themselves which do not have videos that are detrimental to kids who are prone to shutting down?

Regret that the video I posted above did not appear.
Let me try again:

The above video and videos of similar nature are what makes kids shut-down.

The search for solutions to any problem for the common good is best served by openly evaluating all findings by interested parties. It is not helped by removing/blocking some posts n accusing people with different findings/opinions of self aggrandizement and in the process deprive everyone of the opportunity to make objective assessment.

It is very well and good, learning deeper into the challenge faced by children who do not reach grade level proficiency.

But, after having learnt deeply the challenge faced by children who do not reach grade level proficiency, and in the process also learnt what is the reason children struggle to read in English, wouldn’t the natural thing to do next be to show the world how to teach children to read in a way so that they can be proficient in reading and thus be able to read at grade level?

How to teach children to be proficient in reading?
1. Teach them the right way. For example, do not add a vowel sound to letters.
2. If they have been taught the wrong way, they have to unlearn (the wrong method) and then learn the right way as in 1 above.
3. Teach them that some letters in the English language have more than one sound. This is extremely important.
4. Once they have been told 3 above, there will be no confusion because they
can accept that some letters have more than one sound.

David Boulton, notwithstanding the funds that you continually generate from all sources supposedly to find a learning solution for 2/3 the kids of the U.S.A., your arrogant attitude belies this fact.

You believe that only you and close affiliates have the source to the solution and therefore the funds, and are not interested in exploring methods which are proven elsewhere. The fact that you removed 2 links from your website suggests you are not infallible.

Unlike you, Luqman seeks gratification only from the success that has been achieved and hoped that others would be able to benefit.

Yes, the 2 links were removed immediately after my comment. I believe these two videos that were removed were the ones on wrong teaching of phonics that I have been harping on.

When I click on the 2 sites viz:

I see, "This video has been removed by the user."
