This has always been difficult for my son. We worked very hard to get the days of the weeks and the months of the year. He is in forth grade now and still gets confused sometimes, but I am happy to say I just asked him all of the questions in your article and he got them all right! Nice to see that our many hours/days/weeks/months of practice has paid off.Sarah Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07889848699853477686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2929940323242620649.post-46093097599291779272010-02-28T19:50:07.371+08:002010-02-28T19:50:07.371+08:00Yes, you are correct.Thank you Jase. Their understanding comes from the ability to see and amke sense of something before they arrive at any understanding.
Well done.
JaseAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2929940323242620649.post-40981215334994348782010-02-27T06:43:50.035+08:002010-02-27T06:43:50.035+08:00Thanks Anne and Heidi for your comments. Please let...Thanks Anne and Heidi for your comments. Please let other parents know of my blog.
Heidi, let your son see what you mean by fraction. Drawing a square or a circle and dividing it to show a fraction is good but many of my students could not get it until I actually took an orange and cut it in two to show them what is a half. Than I cut it again to show them a quarter.
Do it a few times and also explain that half (1/2) is written that way to show that one (of anything) has been split in two. Similarly, show them why it is 1/4 (one cut into 4 pieces). After that, put back the first two halves and show them how 1/2 + 1/2 = 1 and so on. Hope this helps.Luqman Michelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13089314934834818707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2929940323242620649.post-38219151971152215642010-02-27T03:04:21.653+08:002010-02-27T03:04:21.653+08:00My son is in 6th grade (11 years old), and is hung...My son is in 6th grade (11 years old), and is hung up on fractions because of sequencing the steps.

I never thought of the sequencing problems in quite the way that you stated here...

Thanks.
