The 2004 Accidental Experiment That Proved Reading is not unnatural

In 2004, I knew nothing about phonics, phonemes, or decoding rules. But I was asked to help a child who had completed kindergarten and an entire year of Primary 1, yet could not read a single sentence.

Using my auditor’s mindset—which is trained to question everything and look strictly at raw data—I decided on a simple experiment. I sat with him for one hour a day, opened a Peter and Jane book, and read. He echoed me, sentence by sentence.

Six months later, without a single lesson on letter sounds, he was reading well beyond a Grade 1 level.

In 2021 he graduated with a double degree from the University of Southern Australia.

John Corcoran on LinkedIn and my comments

This is a post by John Corcoran on LinkedIn and my comments.

John Corcoran:

My friend and partner, 🌎 David Chalk, was invited to speak at Stanford University’s Accelerator Symposium, working with top thought leaders on the development of a white-paper for guiding AI and Learning Differences. There couldn't be a better voice to lead this conversation, shaping the future of inclusive learning globally!

Luqman Michel:

He should give a talk on why he could not read until he was 62. How he was able to read after 11 days of coaching should be broadcast to the world. Let us together reduce illiteracy.
