Rotary Community Corps & Shut Down Kids

A Rotary Community Corps is a group of non-Rotarians who share Rotary’s commitment to changing the world through service projects.

RCC members plan and carry out projects in their communities and support local Rotary club projects.

RCC of Bukit Padang, with me as the first chairman, was established on 8.11.2018 with the aim of reducing illiteracy.

One of the Past Presidents’ of the Rotary Club of Luyang, Rotarian Kenneth Tan, has been going around with RCC of Bukit Padang to some schools in Kota Kinabalu during the past one year.

Yesterday, the current President of Rotary Club of Luyang, Rotarian Stephen Siaw, arranged for a talk to parents and teachers at a kindergarten in Menggatal.

When I made my presentation at the kindergarten a Rotaractor translated my presentation into Mandarin. At the end of the presentation she told President Stephen that she will work closely with us on this project as she was convinced that many children are wrongly classified as dyslexic kids. She understood clearly what I meant by Shut Down Kids.

As such I am going to spend my time pursuing my passion in teaching children wrongly classified as dyslexic.

Over the past 15 years I have taught more than 70 children who had shut down from learning to read in English due to confusion.

Many children shut down from learning to read in English due to confusion as a result of:

i.  being taught sounds of letters of the alphabet wrongly
ii. not being told that letters have more than one sound.

You may read some of the testimonials of parents of students I have taught in my weblog at:

It is my hope that through this RCC we will be able to convince Rotary Clubs around the world to take up this cause to reduce illiteracy.
