John Corcoran’s post on LinkedIn

Here is a post on LinkedIn by John Corcoran and my comments.

This guy couldn't read and yet was teaching high school for 17 years.

John Corcoran CEO of John Corcoran Foundation Inc. and Education Management

I grew up in the dark shadow of illiteracy. I often think about what my life could have been like if I had learned to read at age 8, instead of age 48.

Today, over 60% of children in the U.S. are not reading at grade level. That is around 44 million children who will never maximize their fullest potential, no matter how smart or clever they may be, unless they learn to read.

We cannot leave them behind.

Our mission is to facilitate the prevention and eradication of illiteracy in adults and children. We call on others to join the mission.

"People for whom English is a second language will understand this better". I understand and empathize with them too, I think of my oral language as my first language and the written language as my second language. The written is the dominant language for success in the school house and in the workplace. Learning how to read and write is a blessing and dream come true for me. John

Here is a comment from Reachout Dyslexia: Empowering Dyslexics, Bridging Gaps.

No child should be held back from reaching their full potential simply because they lack access to proper reading support.

We cannot leave them behind

I asked:

Luqman Michel

Reachout Dyslexia, Did the author lack reading support when he was at school?

Luqman Michel That’s an interesting question. I’m not sure about his experience, but I think his story highlights how important early reading support is. What’s your view on it?

Luqman Michel

Reachout Dyslexia Thank you. We have been talking about early support for decades and yet we have not reduced the percentage of kids leaving school as illiterates. Are we saying that no school in the world has early reading support?

Luqman Michel You raise really important points! Thanks for sharing the link. My team and I will definitely discuss this experience. Appreciate you sharing your insights!

I commented to John Corcoran:

I have been shouting at the top of my voice why many kids can't read in English. You ought to know why you could not read while at school. Please read the post at and share it with your contacts. LINK

Luqman Michel, I have written three books. I would like you to consider reading them. If you accept my invitation, when you finish reading them perhaps we could set up a Zoom call and have a productive and meaningful dialogue. A dialogue is neither an argument nor a battle of ideas, but a search for the truth between two or more people. Respectfully, a fellow literacy advocate. John Corcoran

Thank you, John. I have bought many books since I started to research why intelligent kids could read in Malay and Pinyin but not in English. I quit working in 2004 to research. I have since taught FOC many parents to teach their dyslexic kids to read. I would be glad to read your book if you sent them to me as a gift.

I would be more than happy to have a Zoom meeting with you to search for the truth. Let me know a time suitable for you.

For your information, I wrote more than 100 articles and comments on social media from 2010 disagreeing with the theory that it was phonological awareness deficit that is the cause of dyslexia until that theory was debunked in 2017.

You may read one or two of the articles by Googling - LINK

I wish you well.
