When I tweeted about foundational contamination in reading instruction, Geraldine Carter of the Reading Reform Foundation (RRF) replied that there are “thousands of requests” and suggested I write my own programme. My book, Teach Your Child to Read, is designed as a practical tool for parents and educators — a way to bypass institutional inertia and give children the foundations they deserve. Where avoidance stalls progress, this resource offers clarity, structure, and empowerment.
But the RRF itself claims to be “dedicated to campaigning for better teaching of reading in the English language.” If they ignore evidence of contamination at the very foundation, who then is accountable for the poor performance of children in the UK?
That’s precisely why I wrote my book:
A practical, child-led programme built on clarity, sound, and sequence.
🔤 What’s Inside the Book?
📖 Preface: Explains why phonics, Dolch words, and context clues must be taught together. Available on Amazon’s sample pages.
🗣️ Vowel Sounds: Children learn that each vowel represents at least three sounds. For example, bald uses the “all” sound—not just the “a” of apple or ace.
🎧 QR Codes: Every lesson includes a QR code linking to audio recordings of all words. Children can learn independently, without adult supervision.
📚 Dolch Words: All 220 Dolch words are introduced across 30 lessons. No new word appears before the child has memorized the previous one.
🧠 Rote Memorization: The book explains what rote truly means—systematic repetition—not the “visual memorization” many teachers mistakenly assume. (See my posts [here], and [here].)
💡 Why This Matters
Geraldine’s suggestion that I write my own programme is ironic—because I already have. The problem is not the absence of solutions, but the refusal to acknowledge and adopt them.
This book was designed to bypass confusion and restore clarity at the foundation. It’s not a commercial gimmick. It’s a practical tool for parents, educators, and reformers who want children to read with confidence.
💸 Accessibility and Publishing
I have no control over the current retail price. I’m actively seeking a publisher in the US who can republish and market the book at a more affordable rate. An edition for India is already under consideration.
For now, I’ve made a PDF copy available for only $2, so that cost is not a barrier to clarity. LINK
📣 Closing Invitation
If you believe children deserve clarity at the foundation of reading, I invite you to explore my book and share it with others who care about literacy reform.
