Naïve Ph.D’s (Part 1)

Dr. Gwendolyn Lavert

Her LinkedIn profile says: International Literacy/Leader Trainers Children's Author Bedford, Texas, United States

On 29.10.2024, I had a telephone discussion with Dr. Gwendolyn Lavert. She told me that she will question me on my book that she ordered on-line.

Today, 6.11.2024 I tried to send a message on Facebook and LinkedIn Messenger to no avail. Both messengers have been blocked. Our discussion in 2019 has been deleted. Fortunately, I had copied it before it was deleted.

Facebook has the following message:

Oct 29, 2024, 7:50 AM Gwen Lavert Audio call 47 mins

This person is unavailable on Messenger.

My question to her was why about 20% of kids leave school as illiterates. She quoted statistics that it was higher than 20%. I asked why this is the case for several decades. Are there no schools in the US where kids who can read is close to 100%?

She asked me my thoughts on why kids can’t read and I explained the 3 reasons listed in my book, Shut Down Kids, and elaborated that the main reason is kids are taught the sounds of the letters wrong. Many kids shut down from learning to read when they are confused. I explained that most teachers teach consonants with extraneous sounds.

She said she has heard many who say their way of teaching works best.

Again, she missed the whole point of what I was talking about. I am not talking about a system to teach. As I have mentioned several times in my blog posts, thousands of teachers have successful ways of teaching kids.

My main point over more than a decade is why kids shut down and are classified as dyslexic.

This is my second effort talking with Gwen.

Here are my discussions with her in 2019. (Gwendolyn has now deleted our conversations on Facebook and LinkedIn.)

Gwendolyn:

You seem stuck on just the sounds and teachers not doing it correctly. I do agree that this is one factor. However, I work in an Urban school where we must examine many factors.

Luqman Michel

Of course, we must examine many factors

However, when the children have shut down (which happens to about 20% of kids) nothing you teach will enter their heads.

The first thing to change is to teach letter sounds correctly. No child will be left behind.

My thoughts now: She did not get it in 2019 and still does not.

Dr. Gwendolyn Lavert, PhD

That’s when you start looking at the cognitive functions that could be undeveloped. That’s why I referred you to the work of Dr. Reuven Feuerstein.

Luqman Michel

The Western world is still talking about phonological awareness which someone said more than 50 years ago.

Dr. Gwendolyn Lavert, PhD

And it’s still true. Some kids aren’t ready for letter sounds first. As you know Reading isn’t a natural process.

Keep in mind, I’m just saying be open to other people’s ideas.

I have data to prove my research and I am a practitioner.

My note now: I am open to all ideas. Why are these researchers not opening up their minds to understanding why kids disengage from learning to read?

What data does this woman have about the ways sounds of letters should be taught?

I have data to show that it should not be taught with extraneous sounds.

If a child is limping because of a thorn stuck in his foot take it out and get him to walk before asking him to run, jump, etc. Stop saying there are many other things like jumping and running a child has to do when he can’t even walk.

Are people this naïve?

On 29.10.24 she said she had ordered my book and would get it the next day. She said she would read it and we can continue our discussion. Why did she delete our conversation and block me?

Why is she still talking about phonological awareness deficit when I informed her that that theory was debunked in 2017? LINK
