Balanced Literacy or SOR - my comments on Dr. Sam Bommarito's blog post

 

On 16.1.2022, I read a post on Dr. Sam Bommarito’s blog. Here are a few extracts and my comments.

Dr. Sam:

 

On the one hand, everyone agrees that the current state of reading instruction is not acceptable. SOR advocates claim Balanced Literacy is the root cause of the problems in reading. They view Balanced Literacy as lacking instruction in phonics and the use of orthographic information.

 

Common sense and teaching

 

 

I read an article a week ago. Here are a few extracts and my comments.

One sentence from the article that caught my eyes is: Once habits become ingrained they can be very hard to shift, even when we are presented with evidence that challenges them.

That statement reminds me of what Charlie Munger had said about how the human mind resembles the human egg. LINK.

Today’s reality: More degrees less common sense

“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated”. Confucius

“Common sense is a basic ability to perceive, understand, and judge things that are shared by ("common to") nearly all people and can reasonably be expected of nearly all people without need for debate.”

The above is the internet definition of common sense. But is 'Common sense' common?
