Lesson 12 – word family ‘oo’

We will learn how to figure out new words from the word families we have learned. We will do it in detail in later chapters but keep the following in mind when you read storybooks to your child. Ask them to figure out new words and you will be surprised at what they can do.

In chapter 12 we are learning the word family ‘oo’.

Teach them the sound of ‘oo’ and then ask them to read the 4 words introduced – book, cook, good and look.

By now your child will be able to read the 4 words introduced without you having to read them.

However, assuming they cannot; tell them the sound made by ‘oo’. Block the first letter with your index finger or a piece of paper and ask him to read the word ‘ook’. Then lift your finger and ask him to read the whole word. From oo > ook > book.

Do it for all the other words and be pleasantly surprised.

By the time we finish the 30 lessons your child will easily be able to figure out all words in his spoken vocabulary.

I have also introduced the past tense using the letters ‘ed’ at the end of the verb cook.

Explain in detail the meaning of past tense to your child and that this is one way of changing a verb into the past tense.
