We don’t need meaning and pronunciation to remember words by sight (Luqman Michel)

Here is a tweet I read this morning that I disagree with.

Helen Proulx @HelenProulx 2 4.2.2024

To sum up- for a word to become a sight word, the meaning must be bonded to the pronunciation. Many words are not meaningful unless read in context (function words). It sounds an awful lot like Meaning, Structure & Visual information. (letters) are important in word reading/learning.

Luqman Michel @luqmanmichel

The following statement is incorrect.

'Words that are known by sight are recognized automatically because their spellings, pronunciations, and meanings have been stored in memory in separate but rapidly linked parts of the brain.'

Luqman Michel @luqmanmichel

'Establishing sight words in memory also requires connecting individual spelling to their meanings.'

Also not true.

The brain is more powerful than what is believed.

A couple of hours later I received the following message from Twitter.

We’ve added a temporary label to your account which may impact its reach. Learn more.

It could be because of my tweets on Malaysian politics but I doubt it as I don’t get many readers of my Tweets, unlike many silly Tweets by others that are read by thousands. My tweets have been 'reach impacted' many months ago long before I reposted tweets on Malaysian politics.

I believe my tweets have been controlled because of my disclosing the truth. Illiteracy and particularly dyslexia is big business. The big boys – the puppeteers- do not like to be exposed. But, as the Buddha said 'The sun, the moon, and the truth cannot be hidden for too long'.

Anyway, coming back to the topic at hand it will be obvious to the many millions of people around the world who speak and read in more than one language that the statement of Linnea C. Ehri echoed by Helen Proulx is incorrect.

I have repeated several times that, within 3 months of 1/2 hour lessons, I can teach any kid who knows the alphabet to read in Malay by sitting the kid beside me and reading to the kid with the kid repeating sentence by sentence after me.

How did the thousands of kids during the whole word period learn to read?

Another important point is the millions of kids and adults around the world who can read the Quran but do not understand most of the words. These people not only can read any word in the Quran but can recite the Quran by memory.

We have educators on Twitter who discourage kids from learning 220 words by rote memory. These are the same people who say that phonics is useless because there are too many words that are not phonetic.

Here is the notification by Twitter:

If this is not bull-shit then nothing is.
