I believe teachers and administrators can benefit from Marzano’s teaching strategies.
We need to give our students the tools they need to be successful in the classroom and beyond.

In short, research will never be able to identify instructional strategies that will work with every student in every class. The best research can do is tell us which strategies have a chance (that is high probability) of working well with students. Individual classroom teachers must determine which strategies to employ with the right students at the right time. In fact, a good part of effective teaching is an art – hence the title The Art and Science of Teaching. (Robert J Marzano)

I love the idea of reading being an art as well as a science. We are being bombarded daily with the 'Science of Reading' resulting in soulless or even meaningless text delivered by robots slowly strangling the art of reading or even thinking!
My comment: I agree that some strategies may not work with every student in every class. However, one strategy that will definitely work in every class in all countries is not teaching the pronunciation of phonemes of consonants wrongly.
I have been repeatedly saying that it is the wrong teaching of pronunciation of phonemes of consonants that is the main cause of kids being unable to read. Is there anyone, anyone at all, who disagrees with me on this?
I have many pieces of corroborative evidence on my blog that
backs up my findings. Many educators including Pamela Snow have said that this
is not the only important matter that needs to be attended to. I have said that
this is the very foundation of learning to read. Meanings of words,
comprehension, fluency, vocabulary all are important but they are all
secondary. If the foundation is faulty there is no point in talking about the
rest. Is there anyone who disagrees with this?
For how much longer are we going to allow the reading wars to go on. I will challenge anyone and say that the reading wars will continue for decades if pronunciation of phonemes of consonants is not taught correctly.
In response to the statement; ‘Individual classroom teachers must determine which strategies to employ with the right students at the right time.’ I would say;
1. All teachers must be told to teach the pronunciation of phonemes of consonants without extraneous sounds. There is no need to ‘determine’ as far as this strategy is concerned.
2. All teachers must inform students at the onset that all letters represent more than one sound.
3. All teachers must be told to teach letter names as they are just as important to reading as are sounds represented by letters.
Marzano also includes several instructional strategies, including ‘Generating and testing hypotheses’.
I have generated the hypotheses and done the testing. You may do the testing too.
