Ethan Lynn, PhD:
Luqman Michel thanks for sharing. I’m curious—what exactly is the method you’ve used with the 80+ kids you’ve taught since 2004? Could you walk me through how you diagnose and then teach them to read?
Luqman Michel:
In Malaysia, I used to talk with kids who were sent to me for tuition. This is to ensure they can speak English well. All my students could speak at grade level or higher.
I then asked them to read the letter names to make sure they knew the letters. All of them do this with ease.
Then I ask them to give me the sounds of the consonants. Without exception, they sound the letters with extraneous sounds.
I then tell the mother I will get the kid to read within 4 months of two hours of lessons per week.
I wean off many students in less than a month. You may read of one such student who recently graduated with distinction. LINK
Continuing from the above- I guide parents from outside Malaysia to my blog which has lessons and YouTube videos to help their 'dyslexic' kids to read. This is free of charge.
I published my book which is available online because a grandma from California asked me for a copy of my book. The postage cost was exorbitant and therefore I published my book. The book I sent to the grandma in California was a book I printed here for distribution during my talks to schools.
NOTE now added:
Many parents have bought my book online. This book can be used by any kid who knows the letter names. Minimal guidance from parents is required as there is a QR code for each lesson in the book. So, a child can read the book while listening to the lesson on YouTube.
