Martin Bloomfield:
Certain as it were certain reading interventions don't work with some kids and these may be the kids that would previously have been called dyslexic.
My response:
Many issues children face in their learning are inter-connected. It might be that a child is displaying concerning behaviour, and is falling behind academically, so each intervention needs to address each individual’s specific areas of need.
A learned skill has deep roots, and it is important to unlearn the wrong things learned and replace them with the correct things.
To determine what intervention is most effective we must know the root cause.
How can intervention work with kids predisposed to disengaging from learning to read when confused?
Let me try and explain to all those who only speak English in a way they may understand.
Supposing Martin has a diesel engine car. Assuming he has filled it up with petrol (gasoline). The car will not function. If Martin removes the petrol and fills it again with fresh petrol will the car function? The car will not function regardless of the number of times Martin replaces the petrol.
Read about a real life example of pouring petrol into a diesel engine. LINK
Similarly, with intervention, teachers should find out the real cause of the problem of why many kids can’t read.
The confusion causing kids predisposed to disengaging from learning to read should be removed.
Many so-called dyslexic kids shut down from learning to read when letters are taught with extraneous sounds. So, teach them the letters the way they ought to be taught.
The inability to comprehend is a result of not being able to read. Bad behaviour is due to shame avoidance of the inability to read. LINK
So, correct the root cause and we will prevent many of the problems faced by teachers and parents.

Here are comments from Dr. Martin on LinkedIn I have copied.
I think that's a bit unfair, Luqman. You make me out to be both incompetent and whiney. I think you would do better to talk to me about what I do and what I think before publicly pouring petrol on my name and trying to set it alight.
My reply:
Dr Martin Bloomfield Sorry doctor. I don't know what else you do.
However, I was referring to the interview with Julian. I was referring to the part where you said that intervention does not work with many students. I was answering your question.
Intervention does not work because teachers are doing the same things they did that caused the kids to shut down from learning to read.
The British are the main culprits in causing many kids around the world to disengage from learning to read.
Please don't tell me I am being racist.
It was the British teachers who taught my teachers who in turn taught me. But this was more than 60 years ago when they knew how to teach sounds represented by letters.
The big boys from UK have seriously caused kids in more than 100 countries to shut down/disengage from learning to read.
I have nothing against you. I wish you well.

"you said that intervention does not work with many students".
- And yet at no point did I, or Professor Elliott, say that. You need to re-watch the clip, and then watch the longer interview (where again, no one says interventions don't work). But even where [someone] *might* claim that, that's as much a part of the conversation as people saying [your] or [another] intervention is the correct one. Professor Elliott is extraordinarily well-researched, and it would do you good to pay attention to his, and others', voices.
In saying I "should stop pouring petrol into diesel engines and complaining the engines don't function", I'll ask you to edit your post. I'm afraid your have essentially publicly accused me of dangerous ignorance, of incompetence, and of being clueless.
Good grief, you've even posted it in a group where I have no right to reply, which isn't only factually incorrect, it's incredibly discourteous.
"I don't know what else you do". Perhaps take it down.
To paraphrase Joe Elliott: "all the people who send me these fierce emails [...] and get up in conferences and are really critical [...] I always ask them have they actually read what I wrote".
I answered:
The following is what was said by you - 'have you found or maybe have you debunked that there are certain reading interventions that don't work with some kids and that these may be the kids that would previously have been called dyslexic or something.'
Julian did not answer that question directly except yes yes.
Martin, I know that Julian is extraordinarily well-researched and I did say that at the beginning of my post. Unfortunately, after 50 years of research, he still has not found the reason why kids can't read in English. He has not realised that kids predisposed to shutting down will disengage from learning to read. These are the kids wrongly classified as dyslexic.
There is no need to take down my post. This is a debate and please feel free to comment on my blog post so that other readers will read what you have to say.
Martin, let us reduce illiteracy.
