以下是来自《第六声》(Sixth Tone)的摘录和我的想法 (Unlocking the Potential of China's Dyslexic Students - Part 2)

以下是来自《第六声》(Sixth Tone)的摘录和我的想法。LINK

Curious kids flushed out of schools in China

Recently, I posted an article stating that many curious, intelligent kids in China are being pushed out of school due to poor grades. This issue arises from the confusion created by teaching Pinyin using Bopomofo initial sounds. This situation mirrors what happens in the Western world, where letters are taught with extraneous sounds, causing many children to disengage from learning to read.

Here is a video to illustrate what I mean by extraneous sounds. [LINK]

Dyslexia in China (Part 3)

This is a continuation of my post yesterday. LINK

Here are the paragraphs highlighted in red in yesterday’s post.

As Maggie pointed out, if you cannot achieve the best grades, you are cast out.

Further, students who performed poorly in Pinyin reading tended to perform poorly in future reading comprehension tests.

Previous evidence showed that poor readers in higher grades (e.g. Grade 4) suffer more from Pinyin reading difficulties than normal readers (Yin and Weekes, 2003; Ding et al., 2015).

The Pinyin phonetic symbols are continuously presented alongside Chinese characters in textbooks until Grade 3 and are provided only when new characters are introduced.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT REPORT

I am copy-pasting this from another blog-post of mine where I have the testimonials of parents of kids I have taught. This is because I have referred this on my post on David Chalk and would like my readers to read it here. This was first posted in my blog in 2019.

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT REPORT

Date of Assessment: 08.01.2019

Chronological age: 9 years 7 months

Report:

Emmanuel was referred by Dr. Fauziah (Gleneagle Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah) due to his learning difficulties and to ascertain his cognitive functioning and whether he is dyslexic.

He can read one-syllable simple English words and a few two-syllable Malay words. He is also slow in writing and when asked to copy, he made mistakes easily. However, he is good at memorizing. With regard to his academic activities, Emmanuel is easily bored, but he can spend many hours playing computer games.

Swallowing whole date - 囫囵吞枣

Yesterday, a few of my friends and I gathered for a get-together during dinner. The food and company were excellent.

During the discussion, I mentioned that many Chinese teachers are teaching Pinyin wrongly causing many kids to shut down/disengage from learning to read.

One of my friends quickly retorted that this statement was uncalled for. We had a healthy discussion on this matter.

Datuk Arifin bin Mohd. Arif- Sabah State minister

Recently I asked someone from Daily Express, what is Sabah’s stand on English being used to teach science and math. I quoted what the Sarawak’s Deputy Minister of Education had said.

"By hook or by crook, Sarawak will continue with its policy to teach Science and Mathematics subjects in English, said Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee."

"We are doing it and there is no turning back for us. We will go all the way till the students reach form five," he told reporters.

Trivia & my book - Teach Your Child to Read.

Perhaps many of you already know this but I just learned it a few days ago. We don't need an ISBN number for printing and selling our books directly. We need it if we are marketing them through a third party - shops etc.

The above image is the amended book cover for the printing in Kota Kinabalu.

The original ISBN number has been deleted and the name of the original publisher removed.

I have checked and see that postage for a copy to Sarawak and West Malaysia will be Rm8. Including packaging and transport, Rm10 is a reasonable price.

So, for those in West Malaysia and Sarawak and other parts of Sabah, the cost per book will be Rm30 which is still so much cheaper than the price on the Internet of RM65.

Contact me if you are in Malaysia and would like to buy a copy. It is not available in book shops.

Here is the book on the Internet. LINK

Please share this info with your contacts.

Dyslexia – What % of the world is dyslexic

Here are a few tweets and my response.

Luqman Michel @luqmanmichel

Most of the so-called dyslexic kids are kids who have disengaged from learning to read due to confusion. They shut down from learning to read. Get rid of the root causes and you will not have to blame Phonics or Lucy Calkins or BL.

Teaching EcoSystems Matter @CreditFlex

Not sure I’d say “most”. But really have had difficulty narrowing down the real percentage.

Luqman Michel @luqmanmichel

The dyslexia advocates try to convince the world it is around 15 to 20%. Some researchers have said it is about 2 %. Recently David Boulton said it s/b around 3 to 5 %.

Here is the latest discussion between David Boulton and Andrew Johnson where this is mentioned. LINK

My second student in 2021

I had stopped teaching in 2019 but started guiding parents to teach their kids who were unable to read.

Here is an email I received from the mother of my latest student whom I weaned off last week.

Good morning Mr Luqman,
