Ego or stupidity (Part 2)

The phonological awareness deficit as the cause of dyslexia was debunked around 2017. Even with the research reports debunking that theory and my explanation of my students being able to read in Malay and Pinyin how audacious is it for James Chapman to say that he stands by what he and Tunmer wrote in 1996?

In 2021 I wrote to James Chapman again. Here is my email.

Dear Mr. Chapman,

It has been over a decade since I wrote the email below to you.

I believe the main reason why many kids cannot read is due to wrong instruction.

Have you changed your mind from what you said 10 years ago?

Mr. Chapman, I must thank you for your kind indulgence with me in the past.

May God continue his blessings upon you.

Dear Luqman

I agree that the main reason many children struggle with reading or are unable to read is due to inappropriate instruction.

I haven’t changed my mind from 10 years ago. I have probably strengthened my views based on more recent publications in the area. I attach a paper I wrote with Prof Bill Tunmer on invitation from an Australian journal.

Kind regards

James Chapman

This response from him after the phonological awareness deficit has been debunked and after my detailed explanation of why Phonological awareness deficit cannot be the cause of kids being dyslexic is not acceptable. But what can we expect from someone who has maintained that for decades? Is it ego or plain stupidity?
